Content Aims.
Publishing content aimlessly really isn’t smart. It wastes time and money for you and your customers. Instead, devise a clear plan knowing exactly what you’re doing and how it will help support your business aims.
Purpose.
Only you know why your in business. And similarly, only you can know why you’re online, maintaining a website – and possibly other channels. All need to have a purpose, otherwise it’s wasting both yours and your visitor’s time. Be clear, and have a plan. Consider if one or more of these reasons are why you’re online:
Portfolio
Showcase yourself and your work.
Sales
Sell goods from a catalogue of products.
Services
Provide skills, knowledge or labour.
Information
Share knowledge, facts and figures.
Entertainment
Amuse people with compelling content.
Social
Talk and engage with others.
Revenue.
Once you’re clear on you’re purpose, consider how this is financially supportive – especially if this is the reason you’re publishing in the first place. Revenue may come directly from the content or website itself, or it may merely be a way to raise your profile to allow you to earn money in other ways. Again, one or more of the following models may apply:
Offline Sales
Promoting goods for sale offline.
Online Sales
A catalogue of goods sold directly online.
Marketing
Content promoting goods and services, (for sales).
Subscription
Subscribers paying for access to content.
Advertising
Third-party advertising hosted in and around content.
Voluntary
Content provided by contributors for free, (no revenue needed).
